What is all the fuss about consignment? Could it fuel your passion and your pocketbook? - Guest Author

Thursday, April 30, 2009
The media and American moms are buzzing about consignment, but my thoughts of consignment shops growing up were musty, dusty shops where the racks were crammed with all kinds of polyester leftovers from the 70s. It’s where we shopped for Halloween outfits. But, ladies, times have changed and we need to give second-hand another look because it might just fuel your passion and your pocketbook.

Today, consignment sales events are on the cutting edge of local and national media, with upscale resale as the hottest trend in spring fashions. You’ve heard ‘cheap is chic’ and I won’t beg to differ because consigning is good for the environment (recycling), it’s an excellent way to reduce your family’s footprint (reselling), you are able to earn back a fair value for the investment you’ve made in your children (recouping), and you get a big, fat check after your items sell (rejoicing!).

As a working mom, I was looking for an exit strategy (other than death) from an IT career when I walked into my first Just Between Friends kids consignment sales event. I know there are other options out there, but this is where the angels sang and blew on their trumpets for me.

The venue was better organized than any kids’ store I had ever visited, the mommy-volunteers took me under their wings (which is no easy thing when you’re breast-feeding), and I found so many great deals for my youngest sister’s baby shower that I had money to take myself to the spa and do the “bargain dance” after a relaxing pedicure.

Consigning is a rather simple concept. You buy what you need and like for your family, new or used, it doesn’t really matter. If you are a good steward of your belongings, it will have another lifespan with another family. If you take really good care of your stuff, you’ll make even more money because there are other families out there looking for what you no longer use or need. Have a toddler? Well, someone just had a baby and will need your infant items shortly.

Twice a year, usually spring and fall, you gather your wealth of unused and outgrown items, so that you can prep and tag your stuff. With Just Between Friends, you enter all of your information into a user-friendly online program and it prints out bar-coded tags for you. Right before each event opens, you drop off your items, which are inspected for condition, fashion, etc., and you pick up your pre-sale pass. Oh, did I mention consignors and volunteers shop events first…before the doors are opened to the public?

Then, here’s the fun part…shopping! You get to shop all of the other moms’ items and they get to shop yours. The prices are great, the selection grows each season, as more and more moms find out and participate, and you don’t have to do anymore work. After the sale, which usually has a couple of discount days included, any unsold items are available for pick-up or you can donate them to a local children’s charity and take an itemized tax deduction while you bask in the warm fuzzies of helping area families in crisis. Two weeks later you get a check in the mail. (sweet!)

The consignment concept is not new, but the innovative twist of using them to create engaging, empowering community events is smoking hot. Moms connect face-to-face, they learn about new opportunities and share resources, while shopping for great bargains, making much-needed money for their family, and having fun with new and old friends.

There may not yet be a Just Between Friends in your area, but look for ways you can reach out and explore new ideas and experiences. I was not looking for another job when I found JBF, I was looking for a way out. Funny, Just Between Friends has been the one thing I would not call work. It is my calling, my passion and my avenue to serve others. Sure, I still clip coupons, shop clearance sales and pull in for good garage sales, but I’m now resale royalty. Just call me the Contessa of Consignment.

Colorado-based mom entrepreneurs are redefining athletic wear with women in mind

Exercise is such a critical part of staying healthy when you are pushing 40. Unfortunately, the majority of members in The Mom Entrepreneur Online Support Group admit they do not have time for a regular exercise routine.

After two kids, and in my late 30s, I have found that my weight seems to fluctuate with every rice cake and dish of ice cream I eat. OK, I love food! Who doesn't? I also love to exercise, but establishing a routine has been tricky.

One thing I have found that helps is knowing that I have workout clothes that fit and are comfortable. When pushing the limits of my "healthy" weight, I do not need to be pushing the limits of my $10.00 Wal-Mart sweatpants.

I recently discovered BornFit, a company that claims to be redefining athletic wear with women in mind. They sent me a sample of their Torrey Full Zip workout jacket in a beautiful forest green color. I found the jacket to be very stylish and made of a double-layer mesh - perfect for helping to keep me warm during those early morning walks.

BornFit was created by two moms; Colorado natives, who grew up among the stunning Rocky Mountains. With their love of hiking and the outdoors, it seemed only fitting to name their clothing after the oh-so-high Colorado 14ers (fourteen thousand foot peaks).

After meeting in college, Lisa Welch and Julie Hill began a lifelong friendship based strongly on their love for life, the outdoors and adventure! An all-time favorite memory includes trekking across New Zealand and bungee jumping off a bridge near Queenstown. After backpacking trips and crazy nights in Vegas, they would eventually reside in Colorado with their families.

The joy of motherhood called and they soon discovered the need for quality (and stylish) athletic clothing. They wanted to create products that not only made women look good, but also made them feel strong, confident and inspired. They founded BornFit on the solid belief that strong bodies produce a confident spirit which, as we all know, is sometimes challenged as a mother.

With the success of the BornFit Maternity Collection, they’ve now expanded the line to include the BornFit Collection, ‘relaxed fit’ sporty styles for women that are sold at boutique running stores, Title Nine Sports and Nordstrom.

Additional highlights include new signature BornFit marks, including a trio of circles that form a reflective logo. These three special circles express “BornFit. LiveFit. StayFit.” Prices range from $40 - $80.

BornFit is currently offering a $15 coupon for products when you go to the BornFit website and sign up for BornFit email alerts/newsletter between now and May 10. Go to bornfit.com and type your email address into the email alert box in the top right hand corner of the website. It is their way of saying thanks and Happy Mother's Day!

Merchant Advance 101: A Quick Primer on Cash Advance Transactions - Guest Author

Anyone with a child in girl or boy scouts knows that the first rule of scouting also applies to business: Always be prepared. As an entrepreneur, you’ve probably learned this lesson pretty quickly - effectively using the resources at your disposal can separate the successful business women from the rest of the pack. With loan default rates at record high levels and credit becoming more difficult to obtain, many entrepreneurs are turning to creative alternative financing solutions like merchant cash advances in order to make ends meet.

Business cash advance transactions are similar to loans in that they involve an application process and a payback period, where fees are charged in addition to repayment of the advance amount. You need to accept credit cards to qualify for an advance - repayment is transferred directly to the provider as a portion of your daily credit card sales. Some providers require additional qualifications, such as a verifiable financial history, existing property leases, or a minimum credit score to qualify. Merchant advances are much easier to obtain than traditional loans - some providers even boast that they approve over 90% of applicants.

Is a merchant cash advance a good idea? What should you look for in a provider? More importantly, what should you look out for? Here’s a brief primer on business cash advance transactions, gleaned from the experiences of real business owners:

FIND A GOOD PROVIDER
All providers are known by their reputation. Before signing a cash advance agreement, make sure to check out your prospective lender. Here are a few places to look:

  • The Better Business Bureau: Check out the BBB website to find out if any complaints have been filed.
  • The Federal Trade Commission: Since merchants can also file complaints against providers, the FTC website is another great place to check references.
  • The North American Merchant Advance Association is a self-regulated organization of advance providers and their website provides information for consumers about industry standards and practices, and allows you to access complaints against providers.

In addition to checking these sites, you should also ask for references directly from a provider, and do a quick online search for more information. Be wary of providers that ask for an application fee, or those that guarantee automatic approvals. Providers with a “clean” record on all these counts are the best choices.

AVOID RISKY AGREEMENTS
Checking references is a great way to make sure your provider has a good reputation, but it won’t shield you from a potentially risky agreement. You’ll need to make certain that your individual service agreement is fair. Here are some “red flags” that a service agreement should be renegotiated:

  • High fees and costs. Many providers charge monthly minimum amounts where you’ll pay a certain amount even if your credit card sales cannot “cover” the agreed upon amount. If your sales drop below a certain level, you may also be responsible for penalty fees and other charges.
  • Merchant account compatibility. Most companies have agreements with several different merchant services account providers. If a company is asking (or requiring) that you switch in order to obtain an advance, be careful - the long term costs associated with switching might be higher than you can afford.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR
While high fees and strict service agreement provisions sometimes cannot be avoided, there are a few things you should definitely avoid:

  • Balloon repayment. Similar to a loan default provision, balloon repayment makes a borrower responsible for the entire advance balance at a certain date or if sales decline below a certain amount. Be extremely cautious if you are agreeing to such a term.
  • Collateral. Some providers require that a business pledge equipment or property, or allow access to a business checking account to cover payments that aren’t transferred correctly or on time. This is like writing a blank check to the provider- try to avoid these kinds of arrangements if you can.
  • Flexible rates. Sounds good in theory, but usually the rate only “flexes” in one direction: higher. Avoid any agreement that will be too difficult to repay.

A merchant cash advance can be a beneficial source of alternative financing for businesses that need cash for any reason. Make sure you choose a reputable provider and sign an agreement you are comfortable with.

New FTC regulations for bloggers - help protect yourself with a Disclosure Policy

Tuesday, April 28, 2009
This morning in my BuzzLogic newsletter there was an article entitled: Bloggers Keep Those Cuffs Off! I thought this was a harsh statement to use for referring to the new FTC regulations for bloggers.

However, it looks like there will be very harsh penalties for bloggers who make false or liable statements when reviewing products and services.

Susan Getgood of Marketing Roadmaps has the best write up I have seen for what to expect and how to protect yourself.

Here is what she told BuzzLogic:
  • Advertising in the form of display ads or paid search are not affected, only sponsored posts and product endorsements.
  • Transparency is key - If you've received a product to review or are getting paid to write a post - by all means disclose this to your audience!
  • Tell the Truth - Well, we know you always do, but sometimes you might feel obliged to say something nice in exchange for a freebie - DON'T. Better to say nothing at all than risk your reputation or worse, get a potential sentence.
  • Check yourself - Are you expressing an opinion or stating a fact about the product? It's the latter that could get you in trouble if its untrue.

Susan also advises to have a good disclaimer, especially if you review products. You should also be very clear about contests and giveaways. I use DisclosurePolicy.org, which allows you to generate your own policy for your blog. If you visit The Mom Entrepreneur Blog and scroll to the bottom of the right hand column, you will see my disclosure badge. Then click the badge to read my policy.

"By disclosing the purpose of a blog, bloggers are letting readers know more about the information they'll be reviewing. Bloggers retain the freedom to write original content, as well as select which advertisers they will represent in exchange for gifts or money." - DisclosurePolicy.org

Is there such a thing as a perfect day?

Monday, April 27, 2009
The weather in the northeast this past weekend was unbelievable. Where I live in NH, we hit 92 degrees on Friday. The kids had school vacation last week so we enjoyed an afternoon at the beach, a picnic lunch, flying our kite, miniature golfing, ice cream, etc. It was a nice preview of the summer months to come.

Our family day together was a bit surreal. The kids had exemplary behavior - they shared with each other, my oldest was complimentary of my youngest while playing miniature golf, they said "thank you" for all the fun things we did that day and they went right to bed that night with no arguments. I had to pinch myself at the end of the day.

Wishing you many perfect days this spring and summer!

Mom Bloggers be aware - new regulations coming for product endorsements

Wednesday, April 15, 2009
I received a call on Monday from a reporter at NH Public Radio. She wanted my opinion about the newly proposed Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations for online product reviews by parents.

The reporter complimented me on being well versed on the subject. Honestly, I knew nothing about it when I received her call. I Googled the subject and absorbed everything I could about the topic before calling her back. I am confident I gave her some good sound bytes.

If this is a topic you are not familiar with, don't wait until the media calls before you learn more about it. This is something that every parent blogger should be aware of since it will affect how product reviews are handled in the future.

My opinion is that if you are an honest blogger and you remain transparent and candid with what you write then you have nothing to worry about.

Here are a few articles you should read:

What is your opinion about the FTC's proposed regulations? Are you worried?

More tips on using coupons and finding bargains

Thursday, April 9, 2009
I continue to cut coupons and look for sales at five different stores every week. It is amazing the discounts you can find if you look for sales, save coupons and then match coupons to sales items at different stores. This process for me has become a game. I enjoy seeing how much money I can save every week.

I wrote a post last week about using ebates.com for additional savings when purchasing online. I also listed a number of online coupon and freebie sites that I recommend.

This past weekend, I found an article at abcnews.com entitled "Coupon Parties Big on Fun and Savings". This has become a very big business. I tried to find someone who offers these parties in New Hampshire, but no luck yet. The article also had some great tips on layering savings and other tips.

After reading that article, you should also subscribe to the Never Pay Retail Again blog. Jodi runs this blog and she really knows her stuff. A few days ago, she gave a great explanation about how to shop CVS by using coupon layering and getting Extra Care Bucks back in order to get tons of items for free.

I will be giving more tips about the art of saving and using coupons over the next several weeks as I continue to experiment and learn about the process from many different experts.

I would love to hear your tips and resources for finding bargains and saving lots of money on retail goods.

Happy savings!

Our 1 year anniversary giveaway celebration

Tuesday, April 7, 2009
Wow! We are already celebrating our 1st Birthday. It has been a great year filled with learning, connecting and growing opportunities.

I have met so many amazing people along the way.

It is hard to believe that this company started because I was unable to network traditionally. I had moved back home to my office since my marketing and PR company had experienced a significant cash shortage. I did not want to layoff employees so I cut my own expenses and took my son out of daycare. Long story short...The Mom Entrepreneur was born (pun intended).

I love this job! It has been awhile since I have been able to feel passionate about my everyday work (other than raising kids, which I love).

I would love to hear thoughts from readers about your experiences with The Mom Entrepreneur over the past year. What is most memorable for you (i.e. favorite blog post, best tip or idea, a connection that occurred because of your association with us, etc.)? A reader will be chosen at random on Friday at 5pm EST from all who share a memory in the comment section. Winner chooses prize from list below.

To celebrate, we will be giving away dozens of prizes. I am not sure how long it will take us, but we will give them all away to our loyal readers. As a mom and an entrepreneur, I sometimes cannot tell how long it will take me to accomplish something. It may take us until the end of the month or end of the season to give our prizes away...but by golly, we will get it done.

List of prizes to be given away:

Fabulously 40 & Beyond

As I inch closer and closer to the big 4...0, I am searching for resources for connecting with other women online who are the same age.

Fabulously40.com is a social network for women over forty that taps into the same nerve that Elizabeth Gilbert hit in the international best-seller, Eat, Pray, Love: The mid-life woman's quest for self re-invention.

After forty, change either happens to us or we make the change happen. Increasingly, this website is where women turn to create their changes for solutions, strategies and tips on everything from money to love and, more than that, for emotional support from a community of diverse women. With a million page views a month, Fabulously40 is the place to go for help and inspiration.

A woman's 40th birthday long signaled change, mostly viewed as negative: encroaching menopause, empty nest. Women today have options their mothers and especially their grandmothers never had and cosmetic surgery and injections are the least of it.

Fabulously40 is the engine for connecting and supporting women in their quest for self re-invention.

The founder, Yana Berlin states "We are finally old enough to know what we want and young enough to do something about it."
Visit Fabulousy40.com and connect with like minded women.

Women-Drivers.com says "Don't Get Chicked"!

I recently learned about a free website that connects women who buy and influence the purchase of cars. Women-Drivers.com connects women and families to certified women-friendly car dealers.

How is a dealership recognized as women-friendly?

Women write reviews about their actual purchase and service experience at car dealerships. This forum not only gives them a voice in revolutionizing the dealership experience for women, but also provides members the ability to instantaneously locate women-friendly certified dealers in the Untied States.

“Women purchase 54% of all new cars each year; however, they influence the purchase of 80%," said Anne Fleming, president of WomenDrivers. "That, along with what women spend on service work to their vehicles, translates into $200 billion dollars worth of purchasing pow-her."

Yet, the process of buying a car is uncomfortable for many women. Why? The vast majority of car salespeople are men and this Venus- Mars communication phenomenon can be intimidating to women.

National research shows that while almost 60% of women have a favorable experience when buying a car and believe they were treated fairly, most take along a man as the ‘balancing factor’ to help them with the negotiating process. The research suggests that many women simply aren’t comfortable and accustomed to negotiating in our culture; many are the best negotiators on behalf of their employers but aren’t so rigid about negotiating for themselves.

Nationally, women pay $1350 more for a car than men. Over the life of a car loan, and taking interest into account, that balloons to almost $3,000. That money represents a lot of gasoline, diapers, groceries, shoes and handbags, or even a family vacation.

Women-Drivers.com is a resource to assist women in locating dealerships that already have a great relationship with women and families. Members can hone in on their own negotiating skills by taking the interactive "negotiating test", which provides custom tips on how to approach the negotiating process at the dealership based upon their personality profile.

WomenDrivers ™ collects experiences, preferences and demographics and sells this to the dealerships, trade associations and industry via the Women’s Satisfaction Index (WSI) INSIGHT ™ subscriptions. These real time reports provide correlative tools, which empower and educate dealerships on ways to improve their service to women - ultimately increasing their loyalty and market share of the dollars spent by women. The better a dealerships review and score, the higher it ranks in the search engines – making it easy for women to locate women-friendly dealers to do business with in their city.

Members can read through the many sections, including new car reviews, current trends, car terminology, and the latest in technology and child safety. See the entertaining “Don’t Get Chicked” YouTube videos on the home page.

Tips for Handling Your Taxes - Guest Author

Saturday, April 4, 2009
April 15th is around the corner and for those of us entrepreneurs who haven’t yet, but plan to file as a sole proprietor, we better get going. It’s estimated that the average American spends 25 hours preparing taxes (according to the U.S. government). Most people use this time to evaluate expenses and income determining strategies for the years ahead. Over the next few weeks, I’ll provide some tips on how to negotiate with business service providers so as an entrepreneur, you are managing costs. In the meantime, here are a few words of wisdom to help you prepare your taxes for next year.

Manage your records: Keep detailed records of payment and sales using a standardized system. If you own an online store, purchasing POS system software will help you with accurate records of inventory, sales, and profits without a stack of papers.

Outsource a payroll company: As an entrepreneur and mother, you have plenty of responsibilities already on your plate. Payroll services typically perform all of the year-round work for you keeping records of your hired contractors and any employee status while informing you of any tax law changes that might affect your business. I firmly stand by the motto that if I can hire someone to do the service and it saves me time to spend on growing my business or being with family, why wouldn’t I?

You don’t have to prepare your taxes alone: A payroll services provider may or may not provide accounting services. If they don’t, enlist the help of an accountant. It doesn’t have to cost you an arm and leg especially in this economy when many accountants are freelancing services to make additional income. An accountant will tell you what equipment you can purchase to get a write-off (especially right now with the new Stimulus Plan in place) and which purchases you should hold off on. Mostly though, an accountant makes sure you have your financial records in order and accurate.

You can always get an extension: Don’t rush to get your taxes done if you aren’t ready. Just download IRS form 4868 and request an extension. If you overpay on any taxes you owe by the deadline, you’ll get a refund once you file your return. Just make sure you pay any taxes you owe to avoid fees and penalties.
