More Tips for Balancing the Supermom Act - part 3

Tuesday, January 12, 2010
This post is part three in a series of three posts about Balancing the Supermom Act. If you missed part one, click here...>, and for part 2, click here...>

Lucinda Cross is the author of Corporate Mom Dropouts. Recently, she gave a teleseminar on Balancing the Supermom Act for The Mom Entrepreneur Online Support Group. This event had a record sign up. Seems this is a very hot topic amongst mom entrepreneurs!

If you were not able to attend the live event, you can download the podcast at this link...>

This week, Lucinda shares her last two tips with us for Balancing the Supermom Act:
  • Stay focused, and don’t get sidetracked: There are only 24 hours in a day. There is also a price to pay for spending too much time on one activity, which can limit your ability to do other things. It is important to focus on the fact that success is equal to results, not effort. Avoid spending time on an activity that is personally satisfying, but not driving the results you want.
  • Just say NO: You will cure some of your frustration and burn out by just giving simple answers without elaborating why YES or why NO. Try it for one week without using the words "Maybe", "I might", or "I will see what I can do". This helps avoid the pressure of feeling obligated or frustrated to commit to someone. Learn to make quick decisions and say "Yes" or "No" instead. Don't elaborate or give extensive reasons for your decision. A simple "No, I can’t do that at this time" is enough. In the end, you will feel emotionally free without having to fit in yet another activity, conversation or event you were not that interested in anyhow.

I am very grateful to Lucinda for taking the time to offer us valuable tips over the three blog posts we have written, and for the live teleseminar she gave.

More Tips for Balancing the Supermom Act - part 2

Friday, November 20, 2009
This post is part two in a series of three posts about Balancing the Supermom Act. If you missed part one, click here...>

Last week, we learned about Lucinda Cross and her new book Corporate Mom Dropouts. This week, Lucinda talks more about the book and the mom entrepreneurs who are featured.

TME: Can you explain how Corporate Mom Dropouts was written to represent the birthing process?
Lucinda: The book took nine months to write and the stories in the book bring you from conception of an idea to the full term birth of a business. Each story starts with an idea and then takes the reader through the growing process. It ends with their success of attaining a business model they love, the time with their family and a profitable lifestyle.

TME: There are several interviews with mom entrepreneurs featured in the book. Can you tell us about these women?
Lucinda: I interviewed over 200 mom entrepreneurs for the book, and the women featured in Corporate Mom Dropouts were hand picked based on their stories about the raw truth. These women provided me with the inspiration and comfort I wanted reflected in the book. Each of these women is living purpose driven lives and they love what they do and who they serve.

TME: How can people order the book?
Lucinda: People can order the book by visiting our site or at Amazon.com.

On December 8th from 1:00 - 2:00pm EST, The Mom Entrepreneur will host Lucinda for a teleseminar entitled Balancing the Supermom Act: tips and techniques for getting more done, spending more time with family and achieving more.

This is a FREE event for moms who do everything themselves, won't seek needed assistance, refuse to delegate assignments, are overwhelmed juggling family and business, and who are experiencing "Burn Out" or “Melt Down”.

This week, Lucinda offers us more tips for balancing the Supermom Act.

1. Get–and stay–organized: There are so many tools and gadgets that are useful for us as moms to make business at home run a lot smoother. Here are some tools that I use that I know you can enjoy and add to your Get-and stay-organized list.
  • Vitalist.com - Helps you to get things done and stay organized. It's easy to use and most of all free. The free version does everything you need.
  • A habit list - Your habit list keeps your action list from becoming overwhelmed by the every-day things and helps you to separate your to do list as well.
  • Remember the Milk - Handles lists and tasks very well, including repetitive tasks. It has a plug-in for Google Calendar for one-stop organizing.
  • Google Calendar - Along with Gmail and Google Reader, this application allows you to keep your life easily organized, intuitively, with no hassle and share your calendar with your network or team.
  • Backpack - Great list-maker, perfect for to-do lists and other types of lists. Backpack can be accessed from anywhere: home, work, Mac, PC, mobile.
  • The trash bag - Clean this bad boy out on a regular basis - not the actual trash but many of us use our desk space as a trash can. Please reduce this bad habit by tossing anything that’s not absolutely needed and you won’t have a need to organize. Free yourself!
  • Don’t forget me when you leave rack - It’s for unloading your stuff as you come in, so it stays organized, and so you don’t forget it as you leave the house. You can personalize the rack and include the kids section or partner section that will hold things that you don’t want to forget such as mail, keys, sunglasses, cell phones, library books and more.
2. Delegate: You do not need to do everything yourself. Identify activities that only you can do effectively, and those that could be done by someone else. What are you spending most of your time doing. Are you putting out fires all day or coming up with creative ideas that can generate cash flow? You also want to examine whether you are using technology effectively to reduce the time you spend on low value tasks.

3. Schedule a mommy day: This is also known as a “Take Your Mom to Play Day” this is not considered me time, this is just time that your child or kids schedule a day that they want to hang with you by themselves. Therefore, since I have two kids, my daughter chose Friday nights to do something together and my son chose Wednesday for me to watch wrestling with him. This not only helps me unwind but I get to know each of my kids likes and dislikes without them battling each other for attention. It works and it keeps them busy.

Stay tuned for more tips on Balancing the Supermom Act next week and for details on a great giveaway from Lucinda at Corporate Mom Dropouts.

My Top 10 List of "Must Haves" for Moms in Business

Wednesday, July 1, 2009
A few months ago, I was invited to speak at the local MOMS club meeting. They had several members who owned businesses and they wanted me to talk about tips and techniques for managing the balancing act.

As many mom entrepreneurs might agree, the balancing act can be a tricky one. I do feel however that there are certain strategies and resources you can put in place to make it a bit easier on yourself.

Here is my Top 10 list (in no particular order), which I shared with the group:
  1. Passion - don't start a business unless you are passionate about it. It is not worth the hassle and heartache to become an entrepreneur, work at something you do not enjoy and then try to balance family on top of that.
  2. Plan - have a plan before starting your business. Otherwise, both time and money will be wasted. As mom entrepreneurs, we don't have a lot of time, and in this economy who has money? If you have time to write a full business plan great. However, this is unrealistic for most. According to Mike Michalowizc, the three-sheet strategy is just as effective. This strategy consists of a prosperity plan (the vision for your business), quarterly plan (the path of your business) and the daily metrics (health measurement of your business). You can learn all about this effective strategy by listening to the The 3 Sheet Strategy To Dramatic Business Growth (Especially in A Down Economy) Podcast.
  3. Cash Flow - you have to constantly be aware of what your cash is and is not doing for you. By keeping track of your payables and receivables and reviewing daily, you can make educated and informed decisions about the health of your business. To download a sample template, click here...>
  4. Business Consultant - I highly recommend hiring a consultant who is knowledgeable about business growth. I made some critical mistakes in my business and finally realized what I did wrong once I hired a business consultant. Unfortunately, I hired her after the mistakes were made. I was very fortunate that my business did not fold all together. Hiring a consultant is a necessary business expense and one that you will see a huge return on investment (ROI) for. I work with Gail Zona of Next Step Business and recommend her services.
  5. Get Connected Socially - it is critical to be connected socially. With the rate of people connecting online increasing exponentially, you are seriously hurting your business if you are not one of them. Networking online is not difficult or scary, but there is a process and a certain etiquette that must be followed in order to build online communities, relationships and ultimately transact business properly. You can learn how to do it the right way by listening to the How To Build Influence and Increase Your Profits Using Social Media Podcast with Scott Bradley of Networking Effectively.
  6. Professional Support - in addition to hiring a business consultant, you should also have other professionals on your team. This includes a lawyer, accountant, HR professional and investment advisor. When I submitted my business plan to the bank, this was required information. Ask for referrals from friends and colleagues, and conduct interviews to locate the professionals that believe in your business vision. I also recommend connecting with hundreds of savvy mom entrepreneurs for networking and support through our Online Support Group.
  7. Personal Support - as a mom entrepreneur, the personal support is just as important as the professional support. This may include a daycare provider, nanny, housekeeper, friend, family, etc. You cannot do it all yourself, but with help, you can manage. If you do not have friends or family nearby that can help out, then I recommend a service like Care4Hire, which can connect you with qualified help in your area.
  8. Keep Up With Trends - The Mom Entrepreneur has been successful in its business growth goals because the industry trends indicate huge opportunity in the mom entrepreneur market especially in the U.S., Canada and U.K. You must always be aware if the need for your products and/or services is growing or declining with your target market(s). Not having this information at your finger tips can be detrimental to the success of your business. Some simple indicators you can tap into include Google Alerts and Google Trends.
  9. Stay True to Yourself - remember that your health and well being is just as important as the health and well being of your family and business. If you do not take care of yourself, then how do you expect to grow a happy and successful family and business.
  10. Keep the Faith - do not give up on your entrepreneurial pursuits or get discouraged. Growing a business and balancing a family is supposed to be tough. If it was not tough, we would not be challenged and easily become bored. Remember everything happens for a reason. Sometimes you have to search long and hard to find the reason or you may never understand why it happened. Just keep your head up and continue moving forward!

One of the hardest working mom entrepreneurs I have ever met

Tuesday, March 3, 2009
Kristina Reiko Cooper is an amazing mom entrepreneur. In addition to being an awesome client, she is the epitome of a mom who is always on the go and truly balancing it all, including a hot musical career, international travel and a newborn.

I had the opportunity to meet her at her CD launch party last November in NYC. That is me pictured with her to the right.

Following is an article my publicist, Adrienne (who is also a mom entrepreneur), wrote about Kristina's everyday juggling act. Thanks Kristina for being an inspiration to all of us!

Internationally-Acclaimed Cellist Experiences Unexpected Adventures on World Tour

In the past few months, critically-acclaimed cellist Kristina Reiko Cooper had her first baby, launched a new album, embarked on a non-stop international concert tour and experienced quite a few unexpected adventures along the way.

Cooper has quickly learned the importance of humor while adjusting to new motherhood in the midst of a whirlwind performing schedule.

“Life on the road is pretty much a circus. I’m in the midst of an international tour, traveling with my baby, my cello, a nanny, a bassinet, a breast pump, toys, a baby gym, stroller, laptop, formal concert gowns, frozen breast milk, a water sterilizer, diapers, wipes and three fully-packed suitcases,” Cooper explained, laughing.

“Language barriers have caused issues for us, too. While we were in Colombia recently, an airport official could not understand that Cello Cooper was not the baby, since the cello had a seat on the plane and the baby didn’t, because I was planning to hold him the entire way. We were delayed for an hour trying to explain the situation and almost missed our flight,” Cooper added.

Recent highlights from her busy life include:

  • Cooper was giving birth during the collapse and bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers – where her husband worked as CEO of their Israeli office. While Kristina was in labor with – and delivering – their first baby, her husband was fielding calls from frantic investors and the media. The day their baby was born was also the first day of the U.S. stock market crash.

  • The pre-concert backstage ritual is nerve-wracking and fraught with superstition. Many musicians insist on eating a particular food or taking a nap before a show. Cooper spends all of her time and energy thinking about pumping milk, wondering when and where she can pump in the midst of the pre-show chaos, stressing about whether she’ll have enough time to pump again at intermission, thinking about how to keep the milk cold in unfamiliar venues and always worrying about whether her breasts will leak through her formal concert gown during the performance.

  • During one recent trip, both four-month-old Zack and the cello were randomly selected for a security check. Security officials required that Cooper play the cello to prove it was really an instrument. Then, concerned about allowing liquids on the plane, they asked Cooper to drink her own breast milk – or wake up her sleeping baby to have him drink from each of the three bottles they were carrying on board – to ensure it was milk and not a dangerous substance.

  • In the midst of childbirth and the beginning of the worldwide financial crisis, Cooper was preparing to launch her new album, Stone and Steel, followed by an extensive concert schedule and publicity campaign.

Cooper is traveling extensively, performing at the world’s most prestigious venues. Within a two month period in early 2009, she will perform in the following locations, bringing Zack, the cello and the nanny along: New York, Israel, London, Colombia, South America, Japan, Kazakhstan, Indonesia and Canada

Kristina Reiko Cooper’s latest CD, Stone and Steel, is a scintillating combination of the ancient and the modern. Cooper, a resident of New York City and Tel Aviv, is well-known for her adventurousness and her passion for new, popular and contemporary works. In her newest release, she takes some old classics and musically expresses them in a completely fresh and novel way.

Cooper has found great success in numerous forms of media, from her best-selling DVDs and CDs, to television performances and commercials, magazine covers, print fashion ads and even her own magazine columns.

She has been the featured soloist with such highly regarded orchestras as the Prague Chamber Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony and the Tokyo Yomiuri Orchestra. Cooper is a frequent featured performer at such prestigious venues as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, Jerusalem’s Henry Crown Hall, Toronto’s Roy Thompson Hall and Kioi Hall of Tokyo.

As a chamber musician, Cooper received the Walter M. Naumburg Chamber Music Award first prize. She has been a member of many renowned ensembles, including the internationally acclaimed Quartetto Gelato, Musicians from Marlboro, and The Whitman String Quartet, and continues to perform as part of the contemporary music group Continuum, and the popular and eclectic ensemble Intersection, also known as Kristina & Laura. She is also the musical co-director of The Israel Chamber Music Society.

She has been featured on National Public Radio, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, NHK in Japan, KBS in Korea, WNYC and WQXR in New York City, as well as in television broadcasts for CNN, PBS, CBC Television, CBS’s 60 Minutes, national Chinese Television, KBS Television in Korea, Fuji Television and NHK Television in Japan.

Cooper received her bachelors and masters degrees in music and her doctorate of musical arts from The Juilliard School in New York City.

When not on tour, she currently splits her time between New York and Israel, where she’s a Visiting Professor of Music at Hebrew University and Musical Co-Director of The Israel Chamber Music Society.

Guest Author - Top 10 Tips for Growth through CHANGE

Thursday, February 19, 2009
Deciding to be a mom entrepreneur is something that requires change and personal growth.

Sometimes change can be overwhelming, even if the change is something you have chosen to do. You can manage change, and use it to grow towards fulfillment and happiness. Many mom entrepreneurs chose this path because it is something that aligns with their values. That’s the first step in successful change. The rest of it takes commitment, courage, passion, and a bit of guidance.

To start you off, below is a list of Top 10 Tips and things to remember for achieving personal growth through change:

  1. Change happens to everyone. You can learn to GROW through CHANGE.
  2. You are in charge. Things are not happening to you…YOU are making things HAPPEN!
  3. Know what you value. If you don’t, you will inevitably get stuck doing the things you don’t!
  4. Do things that honor your values – this is how you will find joy in everything you do.
  5. Assess where you are before you decide where you want to be!
  6. When looking at your life, look at the whole of it – ALL of the areas. You need to understand the context of your life before you make changes in any area (i.e. if you want to make changes in your career, you have to make sure you understand where you are in the rest of the areas of your life – family, friends, community in order to make changes in that one area).
  7. When setting intentions, go for it! You can ask the universe for anything you want! Why limit yourself?
  8. When setting goals, make them measurable, obtainable, and in line with your values!
  9. The key to success is intention, commitment and communication! Think it, document it, and tell someone about it!
  10. ABOVE ALL ELSE, BE GRATEFUL. It is the most powerful attraction force available.

Free Strategy Roundtables for New Entrepreneurs

Tuesday, February 17, 2009
I recently received this information from Maureen Kelly at Biz Book PR. It looked very valuable so I wanted to pass it along. I have signed up for the March 25th roundtable discussion.

Early stage entrepreneurs generally cannot afford a top strategy consultant to help solve problems on product strategy, channel options, positioning, financing, etc. So, as part of her effort to rejuvenate the economy through promoting entrepreneurship, serial entrepreneur and strategy consultant Sramana Mitra will be hosting some free online Strategy Roundtables with Dimdim--the open source web conferencing platform.

Following are the sessions available:

During each 60-minute session, entrepreneurs are invited to pitch Sramana their ideas in a 3-minute presentation. She will review the material in real-time and provide feedback on each pitch, as well as address specific strategy questions from the entrepreneur.

Afterwards, she will take questions about strategy from other participants. The session is open to 1,000 people, but only the first five to sign up for each session will have the opportunity to pitch Sramana and discuss their business. The rest of the attendees can listen, and learn from the interaction. More often than not, the same questions are on many minds, so listening to the roundtable discussions is always a good learning experience.

For more information and to register, click here.

Sramana Mitra is the author of Entrepreneur Journeys, now available on Amazon. She is a Silicon Valley entrepreneur who has founded three companies and provided strategy consulting to over 80 organizations, large and small. She is a weekly columnist for Forbes and writes a widely syndicated business blog, “Sramana Mitra on Strategy” (http://www.sramanamitra.com/). Sramana has a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

I need a new vacuum cleaner

Monday, January 5, 2009
After 13 years of marriage, our vacuum cleaner, which was given as a wedding gift, is on its last wheel. It does not suck things up well and it makes a funny squeaking noise. It is time to put it out of its misery.

I was on Twitter earlier asking followers for advice on what are the best new models/brands for vacuum cleaners. Suggestions included Electrolux Upright, Bissell Lift Off Revolution, Panasonic and Dyson. Any additional suggestions?

Attention vacuum manufacturers, I would like to do a product review for one or more models. If you would be interested in having The Mom Entrepreneur test your vacuum and blog about it please contact us at 603-664-3841 or sponsorship@themomentrepreneur.com.

The Mom Entrepreneur's goals for 2009

Sunday, January 4, 2009
Today is my birthday and the day has already presented a unique challenge. My Twitter account was hacked and sent a phishing message ("look at this funny blog") to all 850+ of my followers.

I have spent the last hour sending out apology messages through Twitter, I changed my password (as advised by Twitter) and alerted people to the mess it created.

On a positive note, I like to take this day to decide what my goals will be for the New Year. I guess I feel that if I call them goals and establish them on my birthday as opposed to calling them New Year's resolutions that I might stick to them longer.

Let's hope this year is different!

Following is a list of my personal and professional goals for 2009. This is also a glance at what I will be blogging about a lot in 2009.

Learn to eat healthy - I use to know how to do this. The holidays present all kinds of good food groups like sugar and fats however. At age 39, I need to be more conscious of what I eat and how much. No more cleaning my kids plates when they don't finish their food. Yes, moms...you know what I am talking about...I know I am not the only one who does this.

Currently, I am looking into the new Weight Watchers Momentum program. Weight Watchers has always worked for me in the past. My goal is to lose 20 pounds. I will keep you posted.

Establish a regular exercise routine - I love to exercise, but I always seem to find it hard to fit it into the day's schedule. We purchased a Will Fit Balance Board today and I have a gym membership. My goal is to exercise at least 30 minutes per day.

Continue to grow The Mom Entrepreneur - The company has been doing very well and I have received positive comments from moms all over the world. I know we are doing something right. StartupNation.com posted an article yesterday on 3 Demographic Trends for 2009. The #3 trend is moms.

There are 10.6 million women-owned businesses in the United States generating $2.5 trillion in annual revenue, according to the Center for Women’s Business Research. Women are starting businesses at nearly twice the rate of men. According to certain industry experts, 85 percent of these businesses are run by mothers.

We will continue to grow our Online Support Group to offer these mom entrepreneurs a place to network and find support from others. Membership continues to be free.

In 2009, we will add more co-op opportunities for members, host a teleseminar series, offer more sponsorship opportunities, start a local support group in New Hampshire, continue to build our free resource list, spponsor contests and give aways, and look for more ways to be a super support system for mom entrepreneurs.

Update my wardrobe - as I approach 40, I want to learn more about fashion. What clothes are best for my body shape and what colors and pattern combinations look good on me.

I am a fan of The Glam Girls Deborah Boland and JoJami Tyler who are image and style experts and authors of the Fabulous After 40 blog. They recently made The Mom Entrepreneur's Top Picks for 2008 list at #8. My goal is to connect with them to get a fashion make over.

I subscribe to their blog, which gives awesome style and fashion tips. If anyone can get me stylin' it is these ladies!

Travel more with the family - now that my kids are a bit older, we really enjoy traveling and exploring together. We plan to travel to Florida this year and possibly Arizona. We always travel to fun places in New Hampshire since we live here.

My goal is to locate family friendly spots throughout the U.S., travel to them with the family and blog about our adventures. We recently got a real good deal on airline tickets. I have also read that the cost of traveling this year may be very affordable. I will let you know what I learn from my research.

Well those are my goals for 2009. I know they may adjust slightly and I will probably add more goals as the year progresses. But at least it is a place to start.

Have you set your goals for 2009? I would love to hear what they are. Please share below.

Groundbreaking Research Profiles Women Business Owners

Tuesday, October 28, 2008
New study shows female entrepreneurs fall primarily into one of five categories

A two year study, commissioned by Jane Out of the Box, a research-based online resource community for female entrepreneurs, shows that all women business owners, though highly dynamic individuals, can be categorized as one of five types. The distinction between the categories, says the study, is based on women’s choices in balancing personal and professional needs.

As a result of the study findings, Jane Out of the Box also provides information on how women who are dissatisfied with their “type” can take relevant steps to move their business and lifestyle to a position that better aligns with their goals. Women who are satisfied with their type will also be given advice on how to reap even greater rewards from their businesses. Additional information, as well as a free, evaluation/classification assessment, can be found at Jane Out of the Box, then log in and click on Which Jane Are You?

The first type listed in the study, referred to as Jane Dough, enjoys running her business and is comfortable and determined in marketing and selling. She may be working longer hours, but she doesn’t mind because she enjoys the enterprise so much. Her focus on growth is why she is five times as likely as the average woman entrepreneur to hit the million-dollar revenue mark with her company. She is clear in her priorities and may be intentionally and actively growing an asset-based or legacy business that she can later sell or pass on to her children. It is estimated that 18 percent of women are Jane Doughs.

Go Jane Go, is the second Jane type. She is a successful female entrepreneur who has grown her business to the point that she may now struggle to get time away from her work for vacations or to take care of herself. She feels confident and organized and has put systems in place to get her work done, however she may have difficulty saying no to clients and/or volunteer opportunities. She is four times more likely to hit the million-dollar mark than the average female entrepreneur. On average, Go Jane Go types also have the highest personal income drawn from their businesses, though she has the least amount of personal time. Go Jane Go types are the least common, weighing in at 14 percent.

The third type of female entrepreneur, Tenacity Jane, may be struggling with cash flow concerns, but her passion is undeniable. She’s likely to be feeling stressed and may also feel overwhelmed and worried, specifically when it comes to business finances and cash flow. She may have a dissatisfactory balance between her professional and personal life, but is determined to make her business a success and refuses to give up. The study showed that 31 percent of women business owners are Tenacity Janes.

Merry Jane, is the fourth “Jane” type. She has created a business that meets her needs for time and freedom. She has time to take care of herself and can take time off when she wants to. She is typically working 40 or fewer hours per week and does not feel extreme stress. Though she generally has a lower income than the other “Janes,” she is happy with the balance she’s created in her life. According to the study, roughly 19 percent of women business owners are Merry Janes.

The final “Jane” identified in the study, Accidental Jane, is a successful, confident business owner who makes a good income. She most likely did not intend to start a business, but had an area of expertise that lent itself to a business idea. She has created her own ideal job through her business, which she may have started due to dissatisfaction with her previous employment or following a layoff. While at work, she may have some difficulty prioritizing what she needs to do, but she readily leaves work “at the office” when she’s done for the day, so she’s not stressed as a matter of course. She likely has no big plans to aggressively grow her business and is simply enjoying the work as it comes. About 18 percent of women business owners are Accidental Janes.

“US Census statistics show that only three percent of woman-owned businesses make it to the $1 million mark,” says Michele DeKinder-Smith, founder and CEO of Jane Out of the Box. “This research should help female entrepreneurs everywhere identify their own type, and determine whether or not the businesses they have built falls in line with their personal priorities and values. Women of all five types may find themselves wishing to be more like a woman in another group. We believe, based on our research, that if this is the case, it is possible to follow a specific plan to change the group you’re in.”

Jane Out of the Box is an online, research-based resource community serving the needs of female entrepreneurs. Jane Out of the Box offers tools, research, resources and networking opportunities to members. Additionally, Jane Out of the Box provides training and marketing consulting services to Fortune 500 companies, non-profit organizations and government organizations looking to meet the demands of women entrepreneurs.

The Mom Entrepreneur Support Group is growing

Thursday, August 14, 2008
It has been almost two months since I started The Mom Entrepreneur Support Group. At the one month mark, we had 100 members and 200 discussions. It is a great group of women who share stories, offer advice and support one another in their pursuit to continually learn how to balance motherhood and run a business.

Our members range from moms just starting a new company to moms who have been in business for many years and run very large companies.

Today, I found two of our members in the news: Shannon Davis of BeyondMotherhood.com was featured in The Plain Dealer and Lauri Harrison of MomToBeDepot.com was featured in the Denver Women's Examiner. It may be strange to admit, but I felt like a proud mother when I found two of our members in the news.

Great going ladies!

Is peeing on the post office floor a federal offense?

Saturday, May 31, 2008
When training anyone to learn a new task, whether it is an employee or your child, you have to be ready to reward for a job well done and offer more training and support when the job is not done correctly. So what do you do when potty training your son and he pees on the post office floor? You grab his hand and walk briskly out of the building to your car and drive away.

OK, so that was Tuesday, the first day of potty training. Today is the fifth day. My son went from about 10 accidents on Tuesday, to two on Wednesday, to no accidents on Thursday and one on Friday. Constant praise, his big boy chart and all of the great advice I received from readers helped me to potty train him quickly. He also seemed ready. We had tried last October and he was not ready so we waited.

My son has now earned his sea creature hat. This was the award he picked according to the terms of his big boy chart. However, this is not as easy to find as I thought. I am looking for a baseball cap or other style hat with sea creatures on it. If you, or someone you know sells a product like this, please email me the details. And if peeing on the post office floor is a federal offense please let me know!

My husband won't let me take my laptop...

The holiday weekend is almost here and we are going camping near Squam Lake in NH. As much as I love camping with my family, I have a hard time being away from an Internet connection for that long. It is my IV therapy I guess. Is that sad or what? I have not yet purchased a BlackBerry (which is the device I am leaning towards) so I will be without email or an Internet connection for almost 72 hours.

As I continue to read through the 1,000+ tips from over 400 mom entrepreneurs who responded to my query on how to find some balance between work and life, I am finding a common theme. Many women have suggested creating quality time with the family that is free from all of the noise of our entrepreneur lives. This is such great advice. I was glad to see this as one of the most popular tips suggested by mom entrepreneurs. I agree that this is so important to do. My children are the most precious gift I have ever been given and I will never take this for granted.

Everyone is very excited for the weekend. My 3 1/2 year old can't wait to climb a mountain...even though he has never climbed one before. We will be with our extended family and the weather in that area is supposed to be beautiful everyday.

I wish you a happy holiday weekend and encourage you to spend quality time with your family. Get away from the hustle and bustle of your busy life and breathe. Enjoy!

Creating a Big Boy Chart

Wednesday, May 21, 2008
My youngest son, who will be four years old in August, has shown no interest in potty training or doing anything that a four year old should know how to do. He explains that he does not want to be a big boy, he wants to stay little. Usually I apply lessons learned at home to managing my employees, but in this case a program I developed for my employees is being used at home.

At Bisson Barcelona, we implemented the Star Reward Program. I created this program last year as a way for employees to reward their peers for going above and beyond. This program greatly increased team work. Each employee is issued star certificates, which can be awarded to their fellow co-workers when they feel that person has helped them in a positive way. Once an employee collects five star certificates, they can turn them in to me and pick a prize from the star jar. Prizes include scratch tickets, gas cards, Dunkin Donut gift cards, a coupon to sleep in one-hour late or leave one-hour early and a coupon to wear jeans on a non-jean day.

So I decided to try a similar technique with my son. Today, we created a big boy chart. Every time he does something that a big boy should do, he will earn a sticker for his chart. Once he earns 20 stickers, he can turn in his chart for a prize. Big boy activities we agreed upon include putting on his shoes, getting undressed, getting dressed, clearing his plate after he eats, and of course...using the potty. He earned his first two stickers today for putting on his shoes twice. He was very excited to earn the stickers, and he has decided that his prize will be a new baseball hat (with animals on it per his request).

I would love to hear suggestions from other moms on methods they have used to encourage their children to become big boys. Wish me luck!

The Balancing Act...Social Networking

Sunday, April 27, 2008
Balancing being a mom and an entrepreneur has always been a challenge...but I have never met a challenge I did not face head on.

Over the past several months, I have been researching the world of social networking in an attempt to understand all of the opportunities available online. Because of my mom schedule, I am usually up very late twittering, blogging or looking for friends and business contacts at MySpace, Facebook and LinkedIn. Sometimes I can steal some time on weekends during nap time. Today however, my youngest does not want to nap so I will have to make this post quick:)

I have recently connected with some other mom entrepreneur groups through social networking. I will keep readers updated on other resources I uncover through these connections.

Here we go...

My first post...what to say...do I attempt to explain my reasoning for starting this blog? Perhaps that is a good place to start. For many years I have searched for resources, other mom entrepreneurs, books, anything that could give me some sort of insight into raising children and growing a company at the same time. What I discovered was that most people do not attempt it...hmmm...I wonder why??!!

The last eight years have been crazy, scary, joyful and a few other adjectives that perhaps I should not list. My goal is to journal the many things I have learned about being a mom entrepreneur in the hopes that someone else may benefit from my successes and failures.
