In the presence of greatness

There are moments in our lives that we can remember meeting special teachers, mentors and leaders who have inspired us, made us cry, taught us a powerful lesson and most of all...helped shape who we are today.

Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and other successful books, defines leadership as "communicating to people their worth and potential so clearly that they are inspired to see it in themselves".

This is such a powerful definition.

Imagine the loyalty and trust leaders would gain from their followers if they empowered them daily to be the best they can be.

Do you inspire your employees, vendors, partners, and others everyday? Are you effectively communicating with them what you appreciate about them and thanking them for their support?

Leaders are not born. Leaders are hard working individuals who use their connections and influence to start a movement that benefits those around them.

Here is a list of qualities all effective leaders should posses:
  1. Ability to lead when a leader is needed and the ability to follow when someone else has more experience and can teach them new things.
  2. Able to find or create opportunities in hard times.
  3. Identifies with the needs of many different people.
  4. Senses when someone needs their help.
  5. Takes the time to listen even when there are many tasks demanding their attention.
  6. Understands their own priorities so that they can help others prioritize what is most important in life.
  7. Recognizes the efforts of others both personally and publicly.

Please help me add to this list. What additional qualities should all effective leaders posses?
